The coronavirus crisis has hit many Anaheim families hard, and you may be struggling to make ends meet. Paying your rent may already be difficult under normal circumstances, but lost jobs and work hours due to the virus have made it near impossible.
Anaheim’s eviction moratorium has helped renters stay in their homes, but we know paying back rent to your landlord can be a big mountain to climb.
We’re here to help. Anaheim’s coronavirus Emergency Rental Assistance Program aims to help struggling renters who deferred rent payments since April 2020, up to $2,100.

How does it work?
Renters who are struggling to pay rent deferred under Anaheim’s eviction moratorium, which began in April, can get help with up to three months rent, at up to $700 per month. Assistance can also be used to pay current or future rent, if impacts from coronavirus continue for your family.
Applicants will be chosen on a first come, first served basis and aid will be distributed starting in July as Anaheim’s eviction moratorium expires June 30. The payments will be made directly from the city to your landlord.
Who is eligible?
Anaheim renters who have lost jobs or work hours due to the economic or health impacts of coronavirus and who meet income and rent cost requirements are eligible for rent assistance.
Income must be at or below the following amounts:
You must also live in a qualifying rental in Anaheim, with costs not exceeding 120 percent of fair market value rents. Those living in temporary housing, such as a motel, also are not eligible.
If you are already receiving other state, federal or nonprofit rental assistance or participate in Anaheim’s Housing Choice Voucher Program you cannot apply for this program.
How do I apply?
Applications for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program will be available online starting June 1, 2020 at 8 a.m. and are due by June 5, 2020 at 5 p.m.
Qualified renters should submit an online application with the following documents:
- Photo identification for all household members 18 or older, such as driver’s license, unemployment ID card, visa, passport or other government ID
- Copy of a recent utility bill, such as water, electricity, phone or Internet
- Copy of current lease
- Landlord contact information
- Proof of income for past two months, such as pay stubs, unemployment benefits, and social security checks.
- Proof of assets for past two months, including bank statements, retirement accounts, IRAs and owned real estate.
- Past rent documents, including pay or quit notices, delinquency notice or other documents, if applying for aid to pay deferred rent
What are the requirements for my landlord?
Your landlord must agree to:
- Comply with Anaheim’s eviction moratorium
- Have a business license with the city
- Submit a W-9 form to the city if asked
- Accept rental payment from the city on behalf of the renter
