Water & Energy Saving Tips

Electricity is often consumed as if it were an unlimited resource, without taking into consideration how difficult it is to produce. Instead, we should be treating electricity as a valuable asset that can be lost at any moment.

Here are 10 ways to be more sustainable with your energy usage.

  1. Turn off lights when not in use. Install dusk-to-dawn lighting outdoors to ensure lights only stay on at night and not during the day.
  2. Install and purchase ENERGY STAR® appliances and receive a rebate for qualified models.
  3. Use power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use.
  4. Purchase a smart thermostat that automatically adjusts temperatures when you are not home. Apply for the rebate once installed.
  5. Rather than use your AC, purchase and install ceiling fans or whole house fans. Receive a rebate for qualified models.
  6. Replace outdated light bulbs with newer LEDs. Click here to see new, improved, and more energy efficient models.
  7. If you must use the AC be sure to change filters regularly. Receive a rebate for an AC Tune-Up.
  8. Bolster your windows. Use window shades and add window film to help insulate your home. Receive a rebate for certified window film projects.
  9. Hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer. Or purchase an ENERGY STAR model and apply for the rebate.
  10. Unplug that spare fridge in the back. If it is still working, recycle it and receive a rebate
Conserving water is another way to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Being water wise helps lower consumption, and ultimately the cost of your bill. Here are some ways you can be sustainable at home:

  1. Only run full loads of clothes when washing. Maximize your washers potential and utilize every droplet of water.
  2. Take short showers instead of baths and use low-flow shower heads. Request a Home Utility Check-Up to have energy- and water- saving devices installed for free in your home.
  3. Run your dishwasher only when completely full and be sure to purchase an ENERGY STAR model to receive a rebate
  4. Transform your lawn by removing water-reliant turf and replacing it with California-native, drought tolerant plants and trees. Click here for more information.
  5. When installing an irrigation system, look for types that are more efficient when using water - like drip irrigation and rotating sprinkler nozzles.
  6. Using a rain barrel helps collect rainwater for lawn and garden irrigation. Receive a rebate for qualified models.
  7. Fixing plumbing leaks not only reduces the amount of water wasted, it will also make a difference on your water bill.
  8. Turn off the tap when not in use. Especially when brushing your teeth and shaving.
  9. If using a hose to irrigate, make sure to have a shut off nozzle attached to ensure no water is being wasted. Receive one for free with the Home Utility Check-Up.
  10. Update your home fixtures by upgrading to high-efficiency models. This can include clothes washers and toilets! Rebates are available for many appliances and fixture.
